DMF是一种强效杀虫剂，用于防止各种消费品在储存时发霉。但是，该物质有时会引起严重的皮肤灼伤。因此，欧盟委员会在2009年3月决定禁止在消费品中使用该化合物。此后，欧盟市场上有超过180次的召回，产品包括家具、玩具、鞋、服装和帽子。英国高等法院判决家具零售商向数千名使用其含DMF产品的受害者支付2000万英镑的赔偿，这是英国司法史上最大的消费者集体诉讼2。
